The doors have opened to Thoravej 29, offering a new setting and new opportunities for the Academy community
On January 2, the Academy moved into Thoravej 29: A building and a community that raises the bar for both architecture and communal change.
Here, a community of 150 members works to create positive change in society through everything from education and employment to arts and mental wellbeing. The Academy is a co-founder of the community, opening up new collaboration opportunities for our nationwide community of civic leaders.
"Social innovation is a central part of the work at Thoravej: Here we work together across disciplines, interests and power positions. The Academy is part of the Thoravej community because we know that you can only create society through joint action," says Anders Folmer Buhelt, Director of the Academy and chairperson of the Thoravej29 association.

A BUILDING THAT RECLAIMS ITSELF 🧱
Around the community, the building on Thoravej also sets a new starting point for sustainable architecture. Behind the transformation are the Bikuben Foundation, Pihlmann Architects, the construction company Hoffmann A/S and ABC Consulting Engineers. Architect Søren Pihlmann describes the building as a 'case study' in sustainable construction.
"Thoravej 29 is a house that recycles itself. It's about rethinking how we find value in our surroundings. It's a new way of meeting the world," he says.
Both building and furniture are made from recycled materials, from concrete stairs to table legs. The building has received a DGNB Gold certification.
"Thoravej 29 is a project that needs to learn from itself, both in building and fixtures and fittings," says Søren Pihlmann.
In addition to the working community for social transformation, a strong art and culture track runs through the building, including studios, artistic workshops, exhibition spaces and a café.
