International cooperation on social innovation in Europe

Danish Social Innovation Academy has since 2020 been appointed by the EU as Denmark's national competence center for
social innovation.

Capacity and deployment

Social innovation is now a major focus area for the EU and all EU countries are required to have a national competence center. The competence centers must spread social innovation, both as a practical approach and mindset. They will do this by building capacity and connecting relevant partners in a common ecosystem. From 2024-2027, the Academy is part of a consortium with partners from Ireland, Belgium, Finland, Czech Republic and Poland.

As a national competence center, the Academy must, among other things:

1

Build an ecosystem for social innovation in Denmark. We do this by seeking out, engaging and connecting key players in the field.

2

Find a long-term model for a national competence center. In other words, ensure that Denmark still has a national competence center when the grant expires in 2027.

3

Create a physical and digital platform for the national competence center and share resources and knowledge with the ecosystem

4

Embed social innovation as part of the policy process and lay the foundation for a national strategy by mobilizing key actors and decision makers

5

Promote new values and innovative financing models that support social innovation

EU Commission competence centers

Since 2015, the European Commission has been working on social innovation as a key to solving the complex societal challenges that European countries share. To this end, the EU has created the European Social Fund Plus program to strengthen cooperation and knowledge sharing on social innovation across Europe through national competence centers.

Competence Centers for Social Innovation

"Funded in part through the 2014-2020 European Social Fund and the EU programme for Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI), a series of six consortia were selected to set up national competence centres and drive social innovation - locally, regionally, nationally and transnationally. Covering 25 countries and mobilising 148 organisations, consortia aim to cultivate networks, build capacities and synergies, spotlight efficiencies and develop the tools and methods that will be essential to growing social innovation (SI) across the EU."

In addition to being a national competence center, the Academy is also the national validator for social innovation in Denmark. This gives you the opportunity to become an official EU case on social innovation and find pan-European partners for your project or your organisation.
