In 2024, democracy was put to the test. More than half of the world's population went to the polls. It has also been a year of conflict around the world, which has brought people to the streets. In Denmark, the debate about the green tripartite agreement has created both hope and frustration, while the young generation has sat in front of Christiansborg and tried to force their voices through the walls. Social media has also seen a growing activist mindset as CEOs participate in the political debate.
In August 2024, we kicked off the annual theme of Democratization at this year's Open Academy. Climate activist Elise Sydendal said that "power is a zero-sum game, and if you really want to involve young people, you have to give up some of your own influence". Elise also encouraged people to find their inner killjoy and dare to try out activist methods. Jon Alexander talked about how we can move out of the consumer role and instead become strong democratic and participatory citizens. And Lars Tønder talked about how we humans can learn from thinking like honeybees and be inspired by how other species practice democracy.
At this year's New Year's Eve event, we take the temperature of the democratic conversation and activist methods, and zoom in on activism as part of the democratization theme.
The event is for Academy members only.
